Insert molding

Custom Insert Molding – Metal, Ceramic & Plastic Inserts Encapsulated

Supported inserts: brass threaded inserts, steel pins, magnets, ceramic components. Materials: ABS, PC, Nylon, PEEK. Free DFM. No MOQ.

Insert molding is a manufacturing process that involves placing a pre-formed component (called an "insert") into a mold cavity before the mold is closed and the plastic material is injected. The plastic then surrounds and bonds to the insert, creating a single, integrated part. This method is commonly used to combine different materials, such as metal and plastic, into a single piece that has both the strength and functionality of the insert and the flexibility and durability of the plastic.

Advantages of Insert Molding:

  • Improved Strength & Durability
  • Reduced Assembly Costs
  • Design Flexibility
  • Space and Weight Savings

How insert molding work?

Insert molding is an efficient and versatile method for combining different materials into a single part, offering benefits like enhanced strength, reduced assembly time, and design flexibility.
Steps in the Insert Molding Process:
1.Preparation of the Insert: The insert, which can be made from materials like metal, ceramic, or another type of plastic, is pre-formed. This could be a metal fastener, a connector, or any other component that will be integrated into the final molded part.
2.Placing the Insert into the Mold: The insert is manually or automatically placed into the mold cavity, ensuring that it is properly positioned and aligned.
3.Injection of Plastic: Once the insert is in place, molten plastic is injected into the mold. The plastic surrounds the insert and forms the outer shape of the final part. The pressure and heat from the injection process help the plastic bond to the insert.
4.Cooling and Ejection: After the plastic has cooled and solidified, the part is ejected from the mold. The insert is now securely encapsulated within the plastic, forming a single, unified part.

Finishing Options for Insert Molding

Insert molding components can be enhanced with various finishing options to meet both aesthetic and functional requirements.

Painting
Description:A layer of paint is applied to the surface of the molded part to achieve a specific color, texture, or appearance.
Silk Screening
Description: A method of printing using a mesh screen to transfer ink onto the surface of the molded part.
Laser Etching or Engraving
Description: Laser technology is used to create detailed designs or markings on the surface of the molded part.
Pad Printing
Description: A printing technique used to transfer ink onto a curved or irregular surface.
Mold texturing
Description:The molding surface is intentionally roughened or patterned, either through the mold design or by post-processing.
Heat Staking or Ultrasonic Welding
Description: Heat staking uses heat to melt plastic to join parts, while ultrasonic welding uses high-frequency vibrations to bond plastics together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of inserts can be molded?

We support brass threaded inserts, steel pins, stainless steel shafts, ceramic components, magnets, and electrical contacts. Custom inserts are also available.

How does insert molding reduce assembly costs?

By integrating metal or ceramic components directly into the molded part during the injection process, insert molding eliminates secondary assembly operations like press-fitting, ultrasonic insertion, or adhesive bonding.

What is the maximum part size for insert molding?

Maximum part size is 1000×800×400mm; minimum part size is 2×2×2mm.

What tolerances can you achieve for insert placement?

Part-to-part repeatability is ±0.1 mm, with mold cavity tolerances down to ±0.02 mm for precise insert positioning.

Can you mold plastic over metal inserts without damaging them?

Yes. Our process controls temperature, pressure, and cooling to ensure inserts are securely encapsulated without deformation or damage.

Do you provide DFM analysis for insert molding?

Yes. We provide a comprehensive DFM analysis to optimize insert placement, material selection, and mold design before tooling begins.
